Take a look around.
What it does
Built around a few things done well.
- Fly through the planets and 20 major moons in 3D, at true scale, with enlarged planets, or as an orrery.
- Run time forwards or backwards at any speed, or jump to a date, with Moon phases, seasons and oppositions on a ruler.
- Follow solar and lunar eclipses, with path maps, local timings and the Moon's shadow seen from space.
- Tap any planet or moon for live distances, light-travel time and its physical and orbital facts.
- Search planets, moons, craters, mountains and Earth's towns and cities.
- Positions from NASA/JPL's DE440 ephemeris, with no accounts, tracking or data collection.
Solar is a free app for exploring the Solar System in 3D on iPhone and iPad. Fly from planet to planet and out to the major moons, against a sky of nearly 120,000 stars. Planet positions come from NASA/JPL's DE440 ephemeris, and the scene can be shown at true scale, with enlarged planets, or as an orrery.
A time bar lets you pause the clock, run it forwards or backwards at any speed, or jump to a date, with upcoming Moon phases, seasons, oppositions and conjunctions marked on a ruler. Tap any planet or moon for its distance, light-travel time, size, rotation and orbit. Search finds planets, moons, named features on the Moon, Mars, Mercury and Venus, and thousands of towns and cities on Earth.
Solar maps each eclipse's path across the globe, with timings and coverage for any place, and lets you watch the Moon's shadow cross the Earth from space. Save any moment and place as a bookmark. There are no accounts, no tracking and no data collection.
Solar is coming soon.
