What the app does
Letterbrook is a storybook word game. Spell words on a 6 × 6 board of letters, and every word brings a little colour back to the illustrated scene, as Finn the fox travels through 24 chapters.
- Connect neighbouring letters, diagonals included, to spell words of three letters or more
- Restore each chapter's scenery by clearing its Frost, River, Seed and Stone tiles, and reach its score before you run out of moves
- Four powers hidden in ordinary letters, each introduced with its own tutorial: Fire, Rain, Grow and Boom
- A preview of exactly which tiles a power will clear before you cast the word
- Free hints, no timer, and a wordbook of more than 300,000 words
- Plays offline, with no account and no adverts
Frequently asked questions
How do I play?
Connect at least three neighbouring letters, including diagonals. Drag across the letters and lift your finger to cast the word, or tap the letters one by one and press Spell it. Each tile can be used once in a word, and going back over your last letter removes it. Press ✕ to clear your selection.
How do I finish a chapter?
Each chapter has a score to reach and scenery to restore. The pastel tiles carry Frost, River, Seed or Stone tokens, shown with their own colours and symbols; clear enough of each kind to meet the goals at the top of the screen. Tokens fall with their letters, and if a chapter needs more than fit on the board, the rest arrive on new tiles. Meet every goal before you run out of moves to complete the chapter and earn up to three stars.
How do the powers work?
Power tiles are illustrated letters you can use in any word. They arrive one at a time over the first four chapters, each with a short tutorial:
- Fire burns the tiles to its left, its right and straight above it: one square away for a three-letter word, two for a word of four letters or more
- Rain washes away every tile below its cloud, to the bottom of the board
- Grow sends a vine up through every tile above its seedling pot, to the top of the board
- Boom clears every tile touching the bomb, diagonals included
When a word includes a power, the tiles it will clear are highlighted before you cast. Everything in that area is cleared, including any tokens. If you use more than one power in a word they act together, and a power caught in another's reach disappears without going off. To see a power again, open How to play (the ? button) and choose Show me how.
Why wasn't my word accepted?
Letterbrook checks words against its built-in wordbook, which includes British, American, Canadian and Australian spellings. Names, brands, abbreviations and offensive words are left out, and words with hyphens or apostrophes can't be spelled. If you think a word should be accepted, email it to us.
I'm stuck
Press Hint for a word you can make; hints are always free and number the letters to follow. Refresh gives you new letters without using a move. Chapters I to III have unlimited refreshes; later chapters give you a few, shown on the button. If no common word is left on the board, new letters appear by themselves without using a refresh. There's no timer, so take as long as you like.
I ran out of moves
Choose Let's try again for a fresh board. You can also start a chapter again at any time with the restart button. Restarting resets that chapter's board and score; completed chapters and the stars you've earned stay safe.
Can I replay a chapter?
Yes. Open the storybook (the book button) and choose any chapter you've reached. Opening a chapter starts a fresh board, and your best stars are kept.
How do I turn sound or haptics on or off?
Open Settings and help (the slider button) and use Little spell sounds and Gentle haptics. Sounds are off until you turn them on. If you turn on Reduce Motion in the Settings app (Accessibility → Motion), Letterbrook shows a brief, still highlight instead of its animated effects.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Letterbrook saves automatically after every move, on your iPhone. Your progress is included in your iPhone's normal iCloud or computer backups, so restoring a backup to a new iPhone brings it with you. It doesn't sync between devices. Progress from the earlier browser version of the game can't be imported.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. The wordbook, illustrations and sounds are all inside the app, so Letterbrook plays fully offline.
Are there adverts or purchases?
Letterbrook has no adverts and no account. This version has no in-app purchases.
How do I start again from the beginning?
Removing Letterbrook from your iPhone deletes your progress. When you install it again, the story starts from Chapter I. Note that an iPhone backup made earlier may still contain your old progress.
Requirements
Letterbrook runs on iPhone with iOS 26 or later, in portrait.
