GymMate – Privacy Policy
Effective 7 October 2026. This policy covers GymMate 2 for iPhone and Apple Watch. The section at the end covers GymMate 1.
Summary
- We collect nothing. GymMate has no account and no sign-in, and it doesn't send us any information about you, your workouts or how you use the app.
- Your workouts are yours. Workouts, routes, splits, heart rate, goals and body measurements are stored on your iPhone and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud database, which we can't read.
- The coach runs on your iPhone. Workout summaries and suggestions are written by Apple Intelligence on the device, or by rules built into the app. Nothing is sent to an AI service.
- No adverts, no analytics, no tracking. The app contains no advertising, analytics or third-party crash-reporting software, and does not use cookies.
Who we are
GymMate ("the app") is published by Digitalhope Ltd ("we", "us"), a company registered in the United Kingdom. We are the data controller for any personal data described here. Contact: support@digitalhopeltd.com.
What the app stores
- Your workouts: activity type, date and time, distance, time, pace or speed, elevation, calories, heart rate, splits, the route you took, the weather and the name of the place where it started.
- Your goals, records and achievements, and the coach's notes about your workouts.
- Body measurements you log: weight, chest, waist, hips and thigh.
- Your profile and settings: optional height, date of birth and heart-rate figures used for heart-rate zones, your units, body weight for calorie estimates, and your app preferences.
This information is saved in the app's private storage on your iPhone. Your iPhone's own backups may include it; those are covered by Apple's privacy policy and your iCloud or computer settings.
iCloud
If you're signed in to iCloud, GymMate keeps your workouts, goals, measurements and profile in sync between your devices using your private iCloud database (CloudKit). That database belongs to your Apple Account: we cannot see or access it. You can turn this off in Settings › [your name] › iCloud. Coach notes are kept on each device and not synced.
Location
GymMate uses your location only while you're recording a workout, to map your route and measure distance, pace and elevation. With your permission it keeps doing this while your iPhone is locked during the workout. Your route is stored with the workout as described above and is never sent to us.
When a workout starts, GymMate sends the location of the starting point to two Apple services: Apple Weather (WeatherKit), to record the conditions, and Apple Maps, to name the place. Apple handles these requests under its own privacy policy and does not share them with us.
Apple Health
Connecting Apple Health is optional. If you allow it, GymMate:
- reads heart rate (from Apple Watch, AirPods or other devices) during and after workouts, workouts and routes recorded on your Apple Watch, and your weight, height, cardio fitness (VO₂ max), resting heart rate and date of birth to fill in your profile and heart-rate zones;
- writes your GymMate workouts and routes, with their distance and active energy, and any weight you log.
Health data is used only to provide these features inside the app. It is never used for advertising, never sent to us and never shared with anyone. You can change what GymMate can read or write at any time in the Health app or in Settings › Health.
Apple Watch
The GymMate Watch app records workouts to Apple Health on your watch. While a Watch workout is running, it shares live figures such as time, distance and heart rate with GymMate on your iPhone over Apple's own connection between the two devices. To offer a "ghost" to race and to spot personal bests, the Watch app reads your past workouts from Apple Health on the watch.
Bluetooth heart-rate monitors
If you pair a chest strap or armband, GymMate connects to it over Bluetooth to read your heart rate. The readings are stored with your workout like any other heart rate. GymMate remembers which monitor you paired so it can reconnect.
The coach
GymMate's coach writes a short summary of each workout and suggests your next session. On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, the text is generated on the device by Apple's on-device model; otherwise the app uses its own rules. Your workout details are not sent to any server to do this.
Music
If you allow access to Apple Music, GymMate shows the track playing in the Music app during a workout so you can pause or skip it. It doesn't store or send what you listen to.
Widgets, Siri and the Live Activity
To show your week on Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, answer Siri and display your workout on the Lock Screen, GymMate keeps a small summary, such as this week's distance and your latest workout, in storage shared only with its own widgets on your iPhone.
Purchases
GymMate is free on the App Store, with no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Pre-release versions
If you test a pre-release version through TestFlight, Apple may share crash reports and any feedback or screenshots you choose to send with us, under Apple's TestFlight terms. We use them only to fix problems and improve the app.
Who we share information with
No one. We don't receive your data, so there is nothing for us to share or sell. The Apple services named above (iCloud, Apple Health, Apple Weather and Apple Maps) act under Apple's privacy policy.
How long information is kept
Your workouts and measurements stay until you delete them in the app. Deleting a workout also removes it from your other devices through iCloud. Removing the app deletes its data from that iPhone; data in iCloud stays in your account until you delete it in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage. Workouts saved to Apple Health stay there until you delete them in the Health app.
Your rights
We don't hold personal data about you. Everything GymMate stores is on your devices or in your own iCloud account, where you can change or delete it at any time. If you have a question about your privacy or your rights under UK data-protection law, email us at the address above and we will reply within one month. You can also contact the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
GymMate is suitable for all ages and collects no personal data from anyone, including children.
GymMate 1
GymMate 1 (2015–2017) used online services that have since closed or are no longer used: an online account and body-measurement history (Parse), Facebook sign-in and sharing, crash reporting (Fabric) and weather (Dark Sky), along with the gymmate-app.com website, which Digitalhope Ltd no longer operates. GymMate 2 doesn't use any of them. When you update, GymMate 2 copies the workouts and settings GymMate 1 stored on your iPhone into its own storage on the device, and leaves the original GymMate 1 data untouched.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, this page will be updated and the effective date changed before the update is released.
