Frequently asked questions
I used GymMate before. Where are my old workouts?
The first time GymMate 2 opens on an iPhone that had GymMate 1, it offers to bring your workouts, splits, routes and settings across. If you skipped it, go to Today, tap the person button at the top left, then Import workouts from GymMate 1. It's safe to run again: workouts that are already there are skipped, and your original GymMate 1 data is left untouched.
GymMate 1 kept weight and body-measurement history online in a service that has since closed, so that history can't be recovered. If those readings are in Apple Health, connect Health and GymMate will show them.
How do I get heart rate during a workout?
Connect Apple Health (from the welcome screens, or Today › person button › Connect Apple Health) and wear your Apple Watch, AirPods Pro or Powerbeats Pro. For a chest strap or armband, pair it under Today › person button › Heart-rate monitor. When a strap is sending, GymMate uses it ahead of other sources.
How do I record a workout on Apple Watch?
Open GymMate on your watch, tap an activity to choose it and tap it again (or Start) to begin. Choose a session or a ghost first if you like. Swipe up for pause, end and Water Lock. With your iPhone nearby, the workout also shows live on the phone, and it is saved to Apple Health and your GymMate history.
Why doesn't the Watch offer a ghost?
Ghosts come from your past workouts in Apple Health that are at least a kilometre long. When the watch asks how much Health history GymMate may read, choose Full History; if you chose Past 30 Days, change it on your iPhone in Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › GymMate.
How does the coach work?
After each workout GymMate writes a short summary, and the Up next card on Today suggests your next session. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence turned on, the text is written on your iPhone by Apple's on-device model; on others it comes from GymMate's own rules. Nothing is sent to a server.
How do I set or change my weekly goal?
Tap the goal card at the top of Today. Choose distance, time or number of workouts, set the target and choose whether every activity counts or just one.
Why is there no weather on a workout?
The weather is looked up once, when the first GPS fix arrives after you start. Without an internet connection at that moment, the workout is saved without it.
Does GymMate keep tracking when my iPhone is locked?
Yes, if you allow location access while using the app. A workout keeps recording in the background and shows on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, where you can pause and resume it. Long workouts with the screen off use much less battery than with it on.
How do I sync between my devices?
Sign in to iCloud on each device. GymMate syncs your workouts, goals and measurements through your private iCloud database automatically.
How do I delete a workout or all my data?
Open a workout and tap the bin icon to delete it from all your devices. To remove everything, delete GymMate from each device and then delete its data in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage. Workouts GymMate saved to Apple Health stay there until you delete them in the Health app.
